Hagar in the Wilderness: The God Who Sees
Scripture exploration on Genesis
“The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered... She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi.”
Mistreated, cast out, and isolated in the harsh wilderness, Hagar felt utterly abandoned and invisible. But the angel of the Lord found her beside a spring in the desert, spoke to her by name, and asked where she was going. Hagar gave God the name El Roi: "You are the God who sees me." When loneliness makes you feel forgotten by everyone around you, remember that God sees every tear and meets you right where you are.
