Naming the Loss
✦ Daily Reading
When someone or something we love is taken away, the world can feel suddenly shattered and strange. In the early days or even months of loss, many people try to stay busy to numb the sharp ache. We tell ourselves to be strong. We pretend we are fine so we do not make others uncomfortable. But God never asks you to pretend. In the Bible, when people faced devastating heartbreak, they did not hide it. They tore their clothes, sat in the ashes, and wept openly. They named exactly what was gone. Grief is simply love that has nowhere to go. When you lose a loved one, a marriage, a baby, or a cherished dream, that pain is real and heavy. Suppressing your sorrow does not make it disappear; it only makes it heavier to carry alone. Jesus understands this deep ache. When His dear friend Lazarus died, Jesus stood beside the grieving sisters and wept openly. Even though He knew He was about to perform a miracle, He paused to honor the reality of death and sorrow. He did not rush past the tears. Today, give your heart permission to feel the shock and sadness. You do not have to fix your feelings or put on a brave smile for God. He sits gently beside you in the quiet rubble of your loss. Naming your pain is the very first step in allowing the comforting presence of Christ to hold you. You are deeply loved right where you are.
Psalm 34:18 — "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
“Dear Heavenly Father, my heart feels so heavy and shattered today. It is hard to find words for this deep ache inside me. I confess that I often try to hide my tears or pretend I am okay. Please meet me right now in my sorrow. Thank You that You are close to the brokenhearted and You do not turn away from my pain. Hold me gently in Your safe arms today. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
Find a quiet spot. Write down the name of the person, relationship, or dream you lost on a piece of paper, hold it in your hands, and quietly say: "God, I bring this loss to You."
